Aston Martin DB11
The Aston Martin DB11 is the manufacturer’s new flag bearer. It is leading the legendary company into the world of turbo-charged sports cars that will ultimately revolutionize the brand. Some believe Aston Martin has held onto its core beliefs that natural aspirated engines were a part of the brand’s core philosophy a bit too long. The reality is that discussion is history now. The replacement to the DB9 is here and it was our goal to see what this very attractive turbo-charged vehicle was all about. So let’s take a look at this sports car from an objective, rather than historical perspective. This is a company that has always balanced style and performance almost perfectly. They are now doing it with the turbo-charged DB11.
Exquisite, Yet Understated Styling
The DB11 has a bonded aluminum structure and aluminum body panels, none of which, were inherited from the DB9. This Aston includes roof strakes that guide the eye and air across the roofline where “AeroBlades” funnel the air over the deck lid, effectively eliminating the need for a visual spoiler, at least up to 90 miles per hour. Once reaching that speed, a small spoiler rises to assist.
There’s something that says “success” about this vehicle but doesn’t shout opulence. For those who don’t want to be challenged to a race at every stoplight, this is a very good thing. That perhaps may be one of the best aspects of the Aston Martin DB11. It allows you to enjoy your success with distinction and not distraction.
Turbo-charged Power
Aston Martin has created a new engine for the DB11, a nice sounding 5.2 liter V-12 that produces 516 pound-feet of torque and an impressive 600 horsepower, about 10% more than the DB9. There are those who may miss the roar of the old naturally aspirated engine but even they will enjoy the increase in horsepower. The DB11 features an eight-speed ZF transmission. Its top speed is said to be over 200 miles per hour and certainly looks the part.
It is important to note that Aston Martin’s relationship with Daimler gives them access to the Mercedes-AMG V-8 power plant but they decided instead to develop this V-12. For that they should be given due props.
A Roomier Interior with Sought After Amenities
Aston Martin engineers have done an excellent job at maximizing interior space, giving the DB11 a roomier cabin. An 8 inch touch-screen display screen is the centerpiece of the dashboard. Starting and stopping the engine and shifting into drive or reverse is a push button away. Convenient controls on the steering wheel allow easy access to the vehicles electronics without distraction. While there is technically seating for four, the vast majority of the room has been reserved for driver and front seat passenger.
What Aston Martin appears to have accomplished in creating the DB11 was move into the turbo-charged world without alienating its fans. It once again has maintained that balance between tradition and progress. This is a car you will immediately feel comfortable with and take pride in owning.
Other than the move to turbo and its use of air to improve performance, there may be no headline grabbing advancements with the DB11. This is likely intentional and understandable. What you have with the Aston Martin DB11 is a powerful and fast, finely crafted automobile with classic good looks. It’s an excellent car to carry Aston Martin’s banner into the realm of turbo-charged powered vehicles.
