“Raise your limits”
McLaren uses these three words in describing the 2017 720S, the second new car of the automakers Super Car Series. It replaced the 650S in May of 2017 and they could have just as well used just three letters. “Wow”.
From its stunning exterior contours to relentless power, this is a car that is redefining the limits of a supercar. It has been awarded the Five Star rating at the Autocar Awards 2017. Strap yourself in for an extraordinary driving experience.
A “Shark Inspired” Exterior
McLaren designers are said to have taken the inspiration for the 720S from the Great White Shark. Its smooth, clean, distinctively McLaren lines seem to morph from every angle. This facilitates superior air management and reduces drag while keeping its power plant cool. A tear-drop shaped glass canopy slices through the onrushing air while providing an exceptional view for those inside. The car features the McLaren Monocage II, a one-piece carbon fiber passenger cabin that is ultra-lightweight while providing superior safety. Doors open forward and up into the roof making every entry and exit a red-carpet experience. For those considering investing in a supercar, you might as well have one that looks the part. The McLaren 720S certainly does that.
A Driver-Centric Cockpit
Thanks to its Monocage cabin and wide opening doors, this McLaren is easier to climb aboard than previous editions. Once inside, you’ll notice all controls and the infotainment system are very driver-centric, leaving the passenger side devoid of knobs, buttons, and controls. McLaren’s previous IRIS infotainment system has been replaced with an improved version, albeit a bit complex. If you don’t use all of the features of your cell-phone you’ll likely never discover all of the digital offerings the McClaren 720S provides. Sitting low in the McLaren’s cockpit is not what one may call a luxurious experience but it does prepare driver and passenger for where McLaren has really raised the limits. It’s relentless power.
Fast and Ferocious
The powerful 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V-8 engine of the McLaren 720S introduces itself with a throaty roar with the push of a button. Even at a standstill, you can feel its impressive 710 hp and 568 lb-ft engine preparing to perform. The numbers are staggering. The McLaren 720S will propel you from 0-62 mph in just 2.9 seconds. It will rocket to twice that speed in a mere 7.8 seconds. With a top speed of 212 mph, this is a car that performs near the top of its class and that includes some prestigious competitors. Power is transferred to its rear wheels with a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. The exhilaration from driving the McLaren 720S doesn’t just come from its white-knuckle power. This is a fun car to drive with its Variable Drift Control. Hydraulically linked damps in the chassis control system eliminates the need for anti-roll bars. It is so responsive it almost feels like it knows what you’re thinking.
Raise Your Limits
Raising your limits means reaching a pinnacle and asking for more. That’s what the McLaren 720S has accomplished. It has combined McLaren’ s sleek, shark-inspired contours with a lightweight Monocage II carbon-fiber cabin and powers it with a 710 hp V-8 engine. It is impressive to the eyes and to the soul. Raise your limits with the McLaren 720S. It doesn’t just take you places. It lets everyone know you’ve arrived.
