The Rolls-Royce Cullinan
The Aston Martin DB11 is the manufacturer’s new flag bearer. It is leading the legendary company into the world of turbo-charged sports cars that will ultimately revolutionize the brand. Some believe Aston Martin has held onto its core beliefs that natural aspirated engines were a part of the brand’s core philosophy a bit too long. The reality is that discussion is history now. The replacement to the DB9 is here and it was our goal to see what this very attractive turbo-charged vehicle was all about. So let’s take a look at this sports car from an objective, rather than historical perspective. This is a company that has always balanced style and performance almost perfectly. They are now doing it with the turbo-charged DB11.
It’s massive size may steal the first glances, but it doesn’t take long to recognize that Rolls-Royce has taken its entrance into the SUV market very seriously. It may be time to go big and go home.
Rolls-Royce Off-Road?
Climbing over rocks and boulders in this $325,000 vehicle may be hard to imagine, but it is at least you know you can. The Cullinan features the automaker’s first ever all-wheel drive and an all-wheel steering system. The aluminum frame and suspension has been beefed up using large capacity air struts and stronger drive and prop shafts. A simple touch of the start button automatically elevates the Cullinan to its off-road driving height. This is an SUV that can travel through water up to 21” deep.
Big Power Up Front
A vehicle with such a large stature deserves big power and the Cullinan delivers. It has a 6.75 liter, twin-turbo V12 Rolls-Royce engine. This massive power plant creates some 563 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. It may also be hard to imagine this SUV reaching a top speed of 155 mph but it is also nice to know it could.
Luxury, Safety, Technology and Convenience
The massive size of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan pays off in a roomy interior with ample seating room for five. Choose from two captains chairs in the rear or bench seating. If you are so inclined, there is a dual, rear-facing seating option that extends over the rear bumper with the tailgate open. It provides a unique seating area for tailgating or just enjoying a sunset.
This Rolls boasts a long list of technology and includes a high-resolution, heads-up display, night vision and an alert-assist that helps prevent drowsy driving. There are multiple crash-avoidance systems including a wildlife and pedestrian warning system and active cruise control. All around visibility is facilitated through a four-camera parking system. The Cullinan has a navigation and infotainment system and onboard Wi-Fi. Doors close from the exterior at the touch of the door handle.
The exceptional “Phantom-like” ride of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is what drivers will really appreciate. This is destined to be an extraordinarily comfortable SUV that is quiet and smooth. The new Rolls-Royce Cullinan is expected to start hitting the road, and off-road, in early 2019.
